Why is my iphone receiving texts in symbols?

I got the iphone 4 yesterday for verizon. Today I sent a text to one of my friends and when she responded it was in all symbols. When I send/receive texts from my other contacts they are all normal except for the ones I receive from her. Why is my iphone doing this and how can I change it???
