For People who have read the mortal instruments series. What is Simon's curse?

What is the rune that Clary drew on Simon and why is it presumed to be a curse. I'm reading the fourth book and it keeps mentioning this curse but it doesn't seem like one. Can someone who has actually read the series explain this to me...thank you in advance
